About our cause
We are BSWS, Betteshanger Social Welfare Scheme. Here to support former coal miners, their families and the local mining community. Registered as a Charity in 1964.
BSWS was originally set up and paid for by Betteshanger Colliery Miners to provide recreational and leisure facilities for coal miners and their families.
Today, we are very much community minded and work closely with the local community and our parent bodies, The Coal Industry Social Welfare Organisation (CISWO) & The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM). Both organisations provide a wealth of knowledge to former mineworkers and their families, access to welfare services, practical and emotional support, benefits advice, pensions and concessionary fuel, advice about coping with ill-health and immobility and providing access to financial support.
Our Sports & Social Club (Cavell Square site) is right in the heart of the local community, just off Mill Hill in Deal. The Club oozes recreational sporting facilities, Indoor & Outdoor Bowls, Cricket, Football (children, ladies & gents teams, Fresh Water and Sea Fishing, Gardening, Judo & Pigeons. It is also the home of the Betteshanger Colliery Welfare Band and as well as being the best amateur brass band in the area, it offers free tuition to all ages as well as running an Academy Training Band. Our latest venture is the new Arts & Culture Centre proving professional classical concerts by the Becker Quartet and Professional Cellist, John Cullis. It is also the main central community hub providing local residents with weekly coffee mornings run by volunteers, Sunday roast Dinners, Weight Watchers, Tuesday Club for adults with SEN and a Monday Abuse Cafe Club in the Pavilion.
We also have a further Club out in Betteshanger. The Village Club, Circular Road, Betteshanger provides a much needed resource to the local community of Betteshanger and is home to the local Brownies and a great stop off point in the summer for dog walkers.
We need your help to enable us to continue to offer and expand our services! By supporting our Lotto and paying £1 a week, you are helping to build and secure our future.
Thank you for your support and good luck with the weekly draw!
